Italy prepares naval deployment to protect shipping in Bab al‑Mandeb Strait

Italy is preparing to deploy its navy to safeguard merchant shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as security concerns in the region continue to escalate. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto announced that he and the chief of defence staff have agreed to mobilize the navy to prepare the necessary measures to ensure the secure transit of Italian vessels. The minister emphasized that the government would not wait for a joint decision from the European Union, stating that Italy possesses the independent capabilities required to protect its commercial interests.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a narrow waterway separating Yemen from Djibouti and Eritrea, serves as a vital corridor connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Historically, the route has facilitated approximately 12 to 15 percent of global trade, acting as a critical passage for oil, gas, and container traffic moving to and from the Suez Canal. The strategic importance of the strait has intensified recently as alternative shipping routes have become more heavily relied upon for global energy exports.

Tensions in the area have risen following actions by Iran-aligned Houthi forces, who have seized control of parts of the Yemeni coast overlooking the strait. These developments have created significant threats to shipping, particularly as nations seek to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen increased instability. Saudi Arabia, in particular, has shifted more of its crude exports toward Red Sea routes to maintain the flow of energy supplies.

Minister Crosetto warned that any disruption to these major shipping lanes would lead to increased transport costs and delivery delays, ultimately resulting in higher prices for businesses and families. He argued that bureaucratic delays in responding to these maritime risks could exacerbate the economic impact of the situation. While the minister confirmed the activation of naval preparations, he did not specify the exact assets or measures that would be deployed to the region.
