White House withdraws nomination for ICE director

The White House has officially withdrawn the nomination of Richard Schroyer to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The decision was announced in a brief memorandum on Thursday, which did not provide a specific reason for the withdrawal of the candidate.

Schroyer, a former Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer with 29 years of service and a veteran of the U.S. Marines, had been nominated for the position in June. At the time of his selection, he was serving as a senior aide to the Secretary of Homeland Security. His nomination had been viewed by some as unexpected, given his limited experience in managing an agency of the scale and complexity of ICE.

The nomination had faced significant hurdles in the Senate, stalling within the Homeland Security Committee before reaching a full floor vote. Opposition to the appointment included Republican Senator Rand Paul, who had blocked the process while seeking additional information regarding the deaths of two individuals in Minneapolis during January incidents involving ICE and Border Patrol agents.

The agency has remained without a Senate-confirmed director since 2017, relying instead on a series of temporary leaders. David Venturell is currently serving as the head of the organization.

Schroyer is noted as a close ally of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, whose department maintains oversight of ICE and other border-related agencies. The White House has not yet provided further comment regarding the withdrawal or potential future nominees for the role.
