Chinese Coast Guard vessel collides with Philippine boat in South China Sea

A collision occurred between a Chinese Coast Guard vessel and a Philippine government boat in the South China Sea on Friday. The incident involved the BRP Datu Magat Salamat, a vessel operated by the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, which was conducting a mission to distribute fuel to local fishermen. The encounter took place approximately 54 nautical miles off the coast of Palawan province.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported that the Chinese vessel performed a series of dangerous maneuvers before making physical contact with the Philippine ship at 11:13 a.m. local time. According to the Philippine authorities, the collision resulted in damage to the vessel's railings, deck structures, and metal supports. Despite the impact, no injuries were reported among the crew.

Video footage released by the Philippine Coast Guard captured the moments leading up to the collision, including crew members shouting warnings to brace for impact. Photographs taken following the incident showed debris scattered across the deck and bent railings. The Philippine Coast Guard characterized the event as a deliberate ramming of a civilian government vessel engaged in a humanitarian and livelihood mission.

In response, the China Coast Guard stated that it was conducting law enforcement operations in the waters near Sabina Shoal. Chinese officials alleged that the Philippine vessel disregarded repeated warnings, deliberately altered its course, and suddenly accelerated to cut across the bow of the Chinese ship. The China Coast Guard maintained that its vessel operated in a professional manner and placed the responsibility for the collision on the Philippine side.

This incident marks the latest in a series of confrontations between the two nations in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. Previous tensions in the region have included accusations of the use of water cannons against government vessels and physical altercations involving personnel. The area remains a site of frequent maritime disputes between the two countries.
