Howard Buffett Named Berkshire Hathaway Chairman

Howard Graham Buffett has been named the new chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, succeeding his father, Warren Buffett. The transition occurred on Friday, at which time Warren Buffett stepped down from the role to become chairman emeritus. While he has relinquished the chairmanship, Warren Buffett will remain a member of the company's board of directors.

Howard Buffett, 71, has served as a director at Berkshire Hathaway since 1993. His appointment to the chairmanship is part of a deliberate division of responsibilities within the organization. While Greg Abel has been tasked with the operational management of the company, Howard Buffett is expected to focus on the preservation of the firm's culture and values.

In a farewell letter to shareholders, Warren Buffett indicated that his son’s primary role is to act as a custodian of the principles that have been established over the company's six-decade history. This arrangement distinguishes Howard Buffett’s responsibilities from those of the investment leadership, positioning him as a guardian of the corporate ethos rather than a direct successor to the investment empire.

Born on December 16, 1954, Howard Buffett is the middle child of Warren Buffett and his first wife, Susan Thompson Buffett. He was raised in Omaha alongside his siblings, Susan and Peter. Throughout his career, he has pursued interests distinct from the financial sector, including work in local government, law enforcement as a sheriff, and the operation of agricultural machinery on his own farms.

Beyond his professional background in agriculture and public service, Howard Buffett has engaged in wildlife and war zone photography.
