Warren Buffett, the 96-year-old founder of Berkshire Hathaway, has stepped down as chairman of the company after 56 years in the role. The announcement, released on Friday, confirms that he will transition to the position of chairman emeritus with immediate effect.
Following his departure from the chairmanship, Buffett will remain a member of the company’s board of directors. His son, Howard Buffett, has been appointed as his successor. Howard Buffett has served as a director of the company since 1993.
This leadership change marks a significant development in the ongoing succession process at the investment firm. Earlier this year, Greg Abel took over the role of chief executive officer, succeeding the elder Buffett in that capacity.
In a statement regarding the transition, Greg Abel noted that Warren Buffett’s influence on the company and its shareholders is unique in the history of American business. Abel expressed confidence in the future of the firm, stating that the corporate culture and values established by the founder will be maintained under the guardianship of Howard Buffett.
