Death toll at 31 in Pakistan police compound attack, AFP reports - Reuters

The death toll from a suicide attack on a police compound in north-western Pakistan has risen to 31, according to officials. The incident occurred on Friday shortly after noon when an explosives-laden vehicle was driven into the facility.

The blast struck the entrance wall of a mosque located within the compound as officers and their families were gathered for prayers. The force of the explosion caused a portion of the building to collapse, leaving the site covered in debris and smoke.

Approximately 80 people, the majority of whom are police personnel, were transported to hospitals following the attack. Several of the injured remain in critical condition, leading officials to express concern that the number of fatalities may increase further. The total count of civilian casualties has not yet been confirmed.

In addition to the suicide bomber who drove the vehicle, authorities believe that between three and five gunmen may have attempted to force their way into the compound. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire as these individuals tried to enter the facility during the chaos.

Among those confirmed killed in the attack were an SP-rank officer, a deputy SP, and three inspectors from the Counter-Terrorism Department. Social media footage from the scene showed significant structural damage to the compound and individuals fleeing the area amidst rising smoke.

As of Saturday, no militant group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack. Investigations into the breach and the identity of the perpetrators are ongoing.
