Russian Parliamentary Election Sparks Diplomatic Row With Moldova Over Voting in Breakaway Region

Russia’s parliamentary election, scheduled for mid‑September, has sparked a diplomatic dispute with Moldova after Moscow announced plans to open 15 polling stations for Russian citizens in the breakaway Transdniestria region. The move is intended to allow residents of the self‑declared republic to cast ballots in the Russian vote.

Moldovan authorities have protested the arrangement, saying it infringes on the country’s sovereignty and contravenes its constitutional order. The foreign ministry issued a statement rejecting the establishment of any voting sites on Moldovan‑controlled territory and warned that Moldova would not recognise any election results derived from the stations in Transdniestria.

The Russian government, for its part, maintains that the polling stations are meant to facilitate the participation of Russian nationals living in the region, many of whom hold Russian passports. Moscow has argued that providing voting access to its citizens abroad is a standard practice and does not imply any endorsement of Transdniestria’s political status.

Transdniestria, a narrow strip of land along the Dniester River, declared independence from Moldova in the early 1990s but remains unrecognised internationally. The area is home to a substantial Russian‑speaking population and hosts Russian troops, factors that have long complicated Moldova’s relations with both Moscow and the separatist enclave.

The disagreement comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Russian election, with international observers monitoring the vote for fairness and transparency. Moldova’s objection underscores the broader tensions between the two neighbours and may affect diplomatic engagement surrounding the election and future cooperation on security and border issues.
