Hungarians and Slovaks Share Breakfast on Historic Danube Bridge

Locals from Hungary and Slovakia gathered on a historic Danube crossing on Saturday to share a communal breakfast, marking a celebration of friendship between the two neighbouring communities. The event took place on the bridge that links the Hungarian town of Esztergom with the Slovak village of Sturovo, drawing participants from both sides of the river.

The bridge, which spans the Danube, is a long‑standing landmark that has endured both wartime damage and the political division of the Cold War era. Constructed in the late 19th century, it was severely damaged during the conflict of the 1940s and remained closed for decades before being restored and reopened to traffic and pedestrians.

Following its reconstruction, the bridge has become a symbol of reconciliation and cross‑border cooperation. Local authorities from both countries coordinated the breakfast event, arranging seating and facilities on the bridge’s walkway to accommodate the gathering.
