Denmark, Greenland and US sign security pact, citing NATO’s role in Arctic defence

Denmark, Greenland, and the United States are scheduled to sign an agreement regarding the security of Greenland on September 22. The signing is expected to take place during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. While the full text of the agreement has not been made public, officials indicate that the pact is intended to shift the framework of Arctic security.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen stated on September 20 that the agreement ensures responsibility for security in the Arctic will no longer rest solely with Denmark and the United States. Instead, the arrangement is designed to place a significant portion of that responsibility under the oversight of NATO. A spokesperson for the alliance confirmed on September 19 that NATO welcomes the agreement, noting that it is expected to advance stability and cooperation in the region.

The negotiations leading to this deal followed a period of diplomatic tension. President Donald Trump had previously expressed interest in the United States acquiring the semi-autonomous Danish territory, at times suggesting the use of military or economic leverage to achieve that goal. These statements, which reached a peak in January, created a diplomatic crisis within NATO and prompted Denmark and Greenland to enter into formal talks with Washington to address the pressure.

Regarding the nature of the agreement, there are differing characterizations of its impact. President Trump has claimed that the deal grants the United States permanent control over the territory. Conversely, officials from Denmark and Greenland have not addressed the President's specific claim of permanent control, emphasizing instead that the agreement is intended to benefit the island while respecting its sovereignty.
