Ramzan Kadyrov re-elected as leader of Chechnya

Ramzan Kadyrov has been re-elected to a fifth term as the leader of Chechnya, securing 99.85% of the vote according to Russia’s Central Electoral Commission. This result marks a slight increase from the 99.73% he received during his previous election in 2021. The announcement followed the conclusion of regional and national parliamentary elections held across Russia over the weekend.

Kadyrov, a prominent ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has maintained control over the southern, mainly Muslim region for years. His governance is characterized by a high degree of autonomy granted by the Kremlin in exchange for ensuring regional stability. This arrangement follows a period in the 1990s when the region was defined by an Islamist, anti-Russian insurgency.

The recent electoral process took place against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has lasted for over four years. Across Russia, Kremlin-backed candidates and parties secured victories in the regional and parliamentary contests, a process that saw most candidates who opposed the war barred from participating.

Kadyrov’s political career began following the death of his father, Akhmat Kadyrov, who was killed in a 2004 bombing by insurgents. Since assuming power, Kadyrov has consistently emphasized his personal loyalty to President Putin. He has also taken a firm stance regarding the conflict in Ukraine, frequently noting that Chechen forces have been actively involved in the fighting since 2022.

The conduct of elections in Chechnya has faced sharp criticism from international observers in the past. Kadyrov has consistently rejected these assessments, characterizing such critiques as Western-backed efforts intended to undermine his administration.
