Red Sea International Film Festival Cancels 2026 Edition

The Red Sea Film Foundation has announced the cancellation of the 2026 edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival. Originally scheduled to take place in the port city of Jeddah from December 3 to 12, the event will now return in the fourth quarter of 2027.

In an official statement, the foundation attributed the decision to a comprehensive review of various factors regarding the timing of the festival. The organization cited the logistical requirements involved in staging an international event of this scale, noting that the move reflects a commitment to ensuring the festival occurs under the right conditions to maintain its established standards.

The cancellation follows a period of speculation regarding the event's viability amid heightened regional tensions. The broader Gulf region has experienced instability linked to ongoing conflicts, including the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, as well as concerns regarding the security of shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia is currently managing an escalation in its conflict with the Iran-backed Houthi group. Recent reports indicate that Houthi forces have targeted various Saudi cities, including a recent incident in which a drone was intercepted near Mecca, located approximately 50 miles from the festival’s host city of Jeddah.

This is not the first major event in the region to be affected by the current geopolitical climate. Earlier this year, the Saudi Arabian Formula One Grand Prix, which was slated for the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, was also canceled due to the fallout from regional hostilities.

Since its launch in 2021, the Red Sea International Film Festival has become the most prominent film event and market in the Arab world. The festival was established following the 2017 lifting of Saudi Arabia’s 35-year ban on cinema and has since grown to attract significant international participation.

The foundation stated that the 2027 event will return with a renewed vision and a program designed to continue celebrating filmmakers from Saudi Arabia, the region, and the global film community.
