News Outlets File Lawsuit Against Trump Administration Over White House Access Bans

Three news organizations whose reporters were denied entry to the White House on Saturday have filed a federal lawsuit alleging a violation of First Amendment rights. The lawsuit targets the president and three senior advisers, seeking an immediate court order to restore the journalists’ access to the White House complex.

The ban was announced by the president on his social‑media platform on Friday, where he said the outlets would no longer be permitted because of what he described as “constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS.” On Saturday morning, correspondents from the three outlets arrived for routine briefings, only to be turned away by Secret Service agents and have their press credentials confiscated.

In a joint statement released Monday, the organizations said they had notified the government that they were filing the suit that same day. They contend that the revocation of credentials occurred without notice or due process and that the action threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.

The complaint has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, asking a judge to declare the ban unconstitutional and to prevent the president’s aides from enforcing it. The plaintiffs argue that the government cannot decide what the press reports or publishes.

White House and Department of Justice spokespeople have not responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit or the circumstances surrounding the credential revocation. The case is expected to proceed quickly, given the organizations’ request for an expedited ruling.
