Venice considers increasing tourist entry fee

Venice is weighing an increase in its tourist entry fee for day‑trippers, with proposals that would raise the charge to as much as €30 per visitor. One report cites the new daily fee at roughly $34, while another gives the figure in euros, noting a possible maximum of €30 (about S$44). The city’s budget and taxation councillor, Michele Zuin, said the current fee of €5 to €10 no longer provides a sufficient deterrent to overtourism and that a higher price would need to be discussed and approved by the regional government.

The entry charge, introduced in 2024, applies only to visitors who do not stay overnight. Early‑bookers benefit from the lower rate, and several exemptions are in place, including for children under 14. Zuin indicated that while there has been “talk of (going up to) €50,” officials could settle on a maximum of €30 if an agreement is reached.

If adopted, the higher fee would be applied for a longer period of the year than the current limited window. In 2026 the scheme operated on selected days from 3 April to 26 July, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and generated more than €5.2 million from just under 680,000 tickets sold.

City officials argue that the fee is intended to curb the influx of visitors during the most crowded periods, helping to protect Venice’s fragile infrastructure and cultural heritage. The measure also seeks to address the city’s longer‑term challenges of overtourism and a declining resident population.

The proposed adjustment, still under discussion, would be part of a broader effort to balance tourism revenue with the preservation of Venice’s historic environment and quality of life for its inhabitants.
