Trump declines to pledge military support to Yemen in call with President Alimi

U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Sunday with Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi to discuss the recent territorial advances made by the Iran-backed Houthi movement. During the call, Alimi requested American military support for his Saudi-backed government following a rapid Houthi offensive that resulted in the group seizing key areas along the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical global waterway.

Despite the request from the Yemeni leadership, President Trump did not provide a direct pledge of military assistance. Reports indicate that while the administration had prepared to launch airstrikes against the Houthis on Sunday following requests from the Saudi crown prince, those plans were ultimately called off.

The Houthi movement, which the United States has designated as a terrorist organization, has recently affirmed a commitment to a 2025 ceasefire. The group has indicated that it will not target commercial shipping in the Bab al-Mandeb strait, with the exception of Saudi vessels. Officials have reportedly held meetings with Houthi representatives at the U.S. embassy in Muscat, facilitated by mediators from Oman.

The strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandeb strait has increased as it serves as an alternative route to the Strait of Hormuz. With U.S. forces already engaged in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, concerns have been raised that a new military campaign in Houthi-controlled waters could have negative consequences for regional allies and global trade stability.

President Trump has previously stated that the United States remains in contact with the Houthis regarding their intentions toward American shipping. The White House and the Yemeni information minister have not provided immediate comments regarding the specifics of the recent diplomatic exchange.
