US East Coast flights grounded following fiber optic cable damage

The Federal Aviation Administration halted air traffic at several major East Coast airports on Monday following a telecommunications failure. The disruption, which impacted more than 1,000 flights, was triggered when a fiber-optic cable was accidentally severed at a construction site. This damage led to a failure in a primary telecom circuit, and a subsequent attempt to utilize a backup circuit also failed.

The outage affected operations at the three major New York-area airports, as well as facilities in Philadelphia and Boston. At the height of the incident, incoming flights were grounded across these locations, and Boston’s airport temporarily stopped accepting arrivals due to spillover volume from the surrounding airspace. The loss of communications was specifically tied to certain frequencies at a Philadelphia air traffic control facility responsible for managing regional traffic.

The timing of the ground stop coincided with the arrival of 130 world leaders and numerous government ministers in New York for the annual high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. The incident prompted officials to prioritize safety, with the FAA stating that incoming flights would not resume until the airspace was confirmed to be secure.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford confirmed that traffic eventually began to resume at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. However, the restoration of service at other affected locations, including Philadelphia and Newark, remained uncertain for a period as technical teams worked to stabilize the system. The ground stop at Boston was lifted once the facility was able to manage the volume of incoming aircraft.

The event has drawn attention to the state of the United States air traffic control infrastructure. The system has faced ongoing scrutiny regarding its age and reliability, leading Congress to allocate $12.5 billion for modernization efforts last year. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the cable damage and the failure of the backup communications network.
