Lithuania maintains stance against easing sanctions on Belarus

Lithuania’s foreign minister stated on Monday that the European Union has no justification to ease sanctions against Belarus. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, the minister argued that the government of President Alexander Lukashenko continues to engage in the repression of political opponents, the violation of human rights, and the support of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

The remarks highlight a developing divergence in strategy between the United States and the European Union regarding the Belarusian government. While Lithuania maintains that there is no reason to soften its stance because the country’s behavior has not changed, the United States has recently engaged in diplomatic efforts involving the release of political prisoners.

Earlier on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington is working on a deal to purchase potash from Belarus. This sector is currently a primary target of European Union sanctions. This development follows a series of negotiations over the past year, including an agreement reached last week in which the U.S. administration facilitated the release of political prisoners in exchange for the lifting of some sanctions.

The diplomatic situation remains sensitive, as President Lukashenko has been largely shunned by Western nations since 1994 due to his administration's domestic policies and his alignment with Russia. While the release of prisoners was acknowledged as a positive step, officials noted that approximately 1,000 political prisoners remain in detention.

Lithuanian officials expressed a preference for coordinating sanctions policy with international partners, noting that a unified approach is the most effective method for exerting pressure. However, it was acknowledged that the European Union’s current sanctions policy differs from the approach recently taken by the United States. Lithuania intends to continue providing assistance to those affected by the political situation in Belarus despite the differing international strategies.
