UK Prime Minister Burnham agrees to Saudi request for air-to-air refuelling support

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on September 21 that the United Kingdom has agreed to a request from Saudi Arabia to provide defensive air-to-air refuelling support. The Prime Minister stated that the decision was made following advice from the defence and foreign secretaries. The deployment is intended to be for a limited time period and is aimed at helping to stabilise the wider region.

The request for military assistance from Riyadh follows an intensification of attacks by the Houthis, who control the most populous areas of Yemen. These hostilities represent a new front in the broader conflict that began in late February with strikes on Iran conducted by the United States and Israel.

Speaking to reporters while traveling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Burnham explained that the support is necessary to keep regional pathways open. He noted that Saudi Arabia has been experiencing ongoing attacks, necessitating the defensive cooperation between the two nations.

To fulfill this request, the United Kingdom will deploy one Voyager aircraft in the coming days. This move builds upon an existing military partnership between the two countries, as Britain has served as a major arms supplier to Saudi Arabia for several decades.

Earlier in 2026, the United Kingdom also deployed its Sky Sabre air defence system to Saudi Arabia. That previous deployment was intended to assist in protecting the kingdom from Iranian missile attacks during the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
