Iran says it could reopen Strait of Hormuz within a week if US eases pressure

A senior Iranian official stated on Tuesday that Tehran is prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eases its military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports. This proposal was reportedly delivered to the United States through mediators on September 16.

The official indicated that for the process to move forward, the United States must officially announce a commitment to resolving the issue through diplomatic channels and agree upon a timeline for future negotiations. The Iranian delegation currently attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York has been granted full authority to engage in these diplomatic efforts.

Tensions have escalated recently, with Iran’s military central command reporting on Sunday that it had received information suggesting the United States was preparing to restart military operations with the support of regional partners. In response, Tehran issued a warning that any such actions would result in retaliation without limitations or considerations.

Despite the call for a diplomatic path, the Iranian official confirmed that President Masoud Pezeshkian, who departed for New York on Tuesday morning, will not hold a meeting with President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly.

The official described the current UN session as a significant opportunity for the United States to return to diplomacy. Tehran maintains that it would welcome a revival of diplomatic relations provided that Washington takes tangible steps to demonstrate its commitment to the process.
