Iran suggests potential talks with US regarding Strait of Hormuz

Iran and the United States have signaled a potential willingness to resume negotiations aimed at de-escalating their ongoing conflict as world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. This event marks the first time U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will be in attendance at the same summit since the launch of Operation Epic Fury, a joint military effort by the United States and Israel against Iran in February.

While President Trump indicated on September 20 that he would be open to a meeting with the Iranian president, a senior Iranian official stated that there are currently no plans for a direct encounter between the two leaders. Despite the lack of a scheduled meeting, the official confirmed that the Iranian delegation possesses the full authority to revive diplomatic talks.

The Iranian government has proposed a potential resolution regarding the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that the waterway could be reopened to Gulf shipping within seven days. For this to occur, the official stated that the United States must fulfill demands to ease military pressure and lift the blockade currently imposed on Iranian ports.

Tehran reportedly conveyed this latest proposal to Washington through mediators last week. The Iranian official emphasized that the United States needs to formally announce a commitment to a diplomatic resolution and agree upon a clear timeline for the process, characterizing the UN General Assembly as a significant opportunity for the two nations to return to negotiations.

In response to these developments, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during an appearance on NBC’s Today show that the United States remains open to engaging with Iran. He noted that such discussions would be welcomed, particularly if they hold the prospect of leading to a positive outcome.
