Swedish prosecutors open investigation into alleged election fraud in one county

Swedish prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into possible election fraud in the town of Borlänge, located in the central county of Dalarna. The inquiry concerns the parliamentary election held on 13 September, which saw the opposition narrowly defeat the incumbent right‑wing government in a contest widely viewed as a referendum on the role of the far‑right Sweden Democrats in a future administration.

The investigation focuses on the election of Mohamed Abdukardir Ali, a candidate for the Left Party, who unexpectedly moved ahead of other party representatives on the ballot. In Sweden’s electoral system, voters select a party but may also mark an individual candidate from that party’s list. Authorities are examining reports that several hundred voters had checked Ali’s name on pre‑marked ballots.

Prosecutor Oskar Edvardsson said the probe was reopened after new information emerged that warranted further scrutiny. The case had previously been closed for lack of evidence, but the recent tip‑off prompted a reassessment of the voting irregularities reported in Borlänge.

If the investigation finds sufficient evidence of wrongdoing, a re‑run of the vote could be ordered in the county, potentially affecting eleven parliamentary seats. Such a development would introduce uncertainty into the final composition of the Riksdag, which currently reflects a slim victory for the opposition bloc.

Swedish officials have emphasized that the inquiry is at a preliminary stage and that no conclusions have been drawn regarding the alleged fraud. The prosecutor’s office has not indicated a timeline for any further actions or possible legal proceedings.

The broader election outcome, which saw the opposition edge out the incumbent coalition, remains in place pending the results of the investigation, which will determine whether any corrective measures are required in the affected constituency.
