Netanyahu to Address Israel's Military Actions at United Nations

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that he intends to use his upcoming address at the United Nations General Assembly to defend Israel's military actions in Gaza. Netanyahu is scheduled to speak at the assembly this Thursday, where he stated he plans to present his perspective on the conduct of Israeli soldiers and address recent criticisms directed at him.

The Prime Minister’s remarks were issued in response to comments made by New York City official Zohran Mamdani, who described Netanyahu as a war criminal and accused him of orchestrating a genocide against the Palestinian people during a television interview on Monday. In a video statement, Netanyahu rejected these characterizations and criticized Mamdani for his public stance.

Netanyahu accused Mamdani of supporting Hamas, labeling the group as terrorists and referencing the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. During that raid, approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 individuals were taken hostage. Netanyahu further alleged that Mamdani had incited riots against Jewish residents in New York.

Mamdani, who had previously suggested he would arrest the Prime Minister despite acknowledging he lacked the legal authority to do so, has consistently denied allegations of antisemitism. He maintains that his criticism of the Israeli government’s military policies is distinct from prejudice against Jewish people and has publicly condemned antisemitism.

The exchange has drawn broader political attention, with some Republican figures labeling Mamdani’s pro-Palestinian advocacy as antisemitic. As the diplomatic event approaches, the rhetoric highlights the ongoing intensity of the debate surrounding the conflict in Gaza and the international response to Israel’s military campaign.
