Adobe launches Premiere mobile video editing app for Android

Adobe is bringing its flagship video editing program to Android phone owners. The Android Premiere app is now available to download from the Google Play Store, the company announced on Tuesday.

Premiere is the mobile app version of Adobe’s flagship video editing software. It first became available on iOS last year, and now, Android phone owners will be able to edit their videos on the go, too. The app is designed to be compatible with all manner of Android phones, including foldables like the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 8. And as a nice perk for foldable fans, you can edit videos with the phone closed and opened up — the multitrack editing timeline and preview video are visible in each configuration.

Adobe has long been the industry standard for professional content editing software, from filmmakers to marketers and photojournalists. But over the past decade, as seemingly everyone has become a content creator, the company has faced increased competition from cheaper, more user-friendly services like Canva, CapCut and Instagram Edits. Premiere and the long-awaited Photoshop mobile apps are one way Adobe is trying to remain competitive.

As the demands on content creators keep rising, mobile apps are an increasingly popular way for creators to keep up. Some creators, particularly in India and Brazil, are adopting a mobile-only editing workflow, Diksha Kuhar, Adobe’s director of product marketing for Premiere, told me.

You can download the app for free from the Google Play Store. You don’t need an Adobe account or subscription, unless you want to use Adobe’s Firefly AI editing features or cloud storage, which may prompt you to sign up for a subscription.

The Android app was designed to work for aspiring creators and professionals. Beginners can scroll through the app’s library of templates and be guided through creating their own version. Popular tools such as enhance audio are available on the new mobile app, letting you clean up messy audio by enhancing speech and removing background noise. You can also directly publish your videos as YouTube Shorts from Premiere, like how you can directly publish Instagram Reels from Edits, thanks to a partnership between Adobe and YouTube.

In my experience using the Premiere iPhone app, I found it to be a relatively easy, quick way to edit videos. The auto-captioning is particularly useful. You can download videos free of watermarks, and there aren’t any ads clouding the app. (At least not for now. Never say never.) But don’t go in expecting the full bulk of the desktop app’s editing tools. If you need to do meticulous editing on longer videos, you’re probably still best off using Premiere on a laptop or desktop.
