Spain approves court proceedings for US extradition request of James Cox Chambers

The Spanish government has decided to allow a United States extradition request for American citizen James Cox Chambers to proceed through the Spanish court system. Chambers, a 41-year-old media heir and activist, was arrested on July 10 while vacationing in Ibiza and is currently held in pre-trial detention in Madrid. The decision by the council of ministers to remand the case to the judiciary initiates a legal process that could span several months.

The extradition request is the first known instance of the United States seeking to extradite a citizen over alleged support for Hamas. While the U.S. government has not publicly detailed the specific charges, Chambers’ legal team has stated that the allegations involve money laundering and support for groups designated as terrorist organizations by the United States and the United Kingdom. Chambers has reportedly donated over $1 million to humanitarian causes in Gaza, including the Sameer Project, and has provided financial support for legal fees related to members of the activist group Palestine Action.

Chambers, who divested from his family’s media conglomerate, Cox Enterprises, in 2023, has described himself as an anti-imperialist and communist. In various interviews and social media posts, he has expressed opposition to the United States government. His supporters, including a group of Spanish parliamentarians and various public figures, have characterized the extradition request as political persecution. They argue that the case is illegitimate under Spanish law, a sentiment echoed by some members of Spain’s left-wing coalition government who have voiced opposition to the proceedings.

The case has created diplomatic friction, as the Spanish government’s pro-Palestinian stance has previously drawn criticism from the United States. Despite the political sensitivity of the matter, the Spanish cabinet opted to move the request forward rather than rejecting it outright. The legal proceedings are now expected to unfold within the Spanish justice system, where a judge is currently considering a third request from Chambers' defense team to release him on bond.

In response to the ongoing extradition efforts, Chambers has initiated an application for asylum in Spain. According to his attorney, Aitor Martínez, Spanish law dictates that an active asylum application prevents the country from extraditing an individual until the process has been fully concluded. The legal team continues to challenge the U.S. request as the case moves through the courts.
