Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the President indicated he has discussed the possibility with his administration, suggesting that retaining domestic diesel supplies could help lower costs for consumers and potentially ease prices for regular gasoline.

The push for export restrictions comes as national average diesel prices have climbed above $6.50 per gallon. The surge in costs has been attributed to constrained global oil supplies resulting from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Iran, and Ukraine, which have disrupted exports from major producers including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Political urgency surrounding the issue has intensified ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Republican lawmakers, particularly those representing agricultural states, have argued that the current price environment is severely impacting the income of farmers and placing financial strain on voters. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa recently highlighted these concerns, stating that high diesel costs are negatively affecting the agricultural sector.

In response to the President's comments, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the administration is currently evaluating the feasibility of such a policy. Officials are assessing whether a full or partial ban could be implemented effectively without causing significant disruptions to domestic refinery capabilities.

The proposal has highlighted internal divisions within the administration. While the President has signaled his support for the measure, some energy officials have cautioned against an export ban.
