Donald Trump expresses support for potential US diesel export ban

Former President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed a proposal to ban the export of diesel fuel from the United States. Speaking from the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump stated that he has advocated for such a measure within his own circles as a means to address record-high fuel prices currently impacting the American economy.

The call for an export ban follows a period of significant volatility in the energy market, with national average diesel prices reaching $6.52 per gallon according to recent data. Prices have risen by nearly $1 per gallon during the month of September alone, marking an increase of approximately 80 percent since the beginning of a conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran earlier this year.

The current supply constraints are largely attributed to the disruption of shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which roughly 10 percent of the world’s water-borne diesel typically flows. Additionally, ongoing Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure have further restricted global fuel supplies, placing increased pressure on the United States to fill the resulting deficit in the international market.

While diesel is used by a relatively small number of passenger vehicles in the United States, it remains a vital component of the national economy. The fuel powers the majority of the country's freight transport, including trucks, trains, and ships, and serves as a primary energy source for the agricultural sector. Consequently, rising costs in this sector are contributing to broader economic concerns.

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicates that during the week of September 11, the United States produced more than 5 million barrels of distillate fuels per day. During that same period, approximately 1.6 million barrels were exported to international markets. Proponents of an export ban suggest that retaining this fuel domestically could help stabilize prices, though the potential impact of such a policy remains a subject of ongoing discussion.
