IPL 2027 auction to be held in Goa in December

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 players’ auction will be conducted in Goa in December. The decision brings the auction back to Indian soil after three consecutive editions were held abroad.

The previous three auctions were staged outside India, with the 2024 event taking place in Dubai, the 2025 mega‑auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The upcoming Goa auction will therefore be the first IPL auction held in India since 2023.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia announced the venue shift, noting that after hosting the auction in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi in recent years, the board is returning the event to Goa. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had earlier indicated that the board’s desire to bring the auction back to India had been hampered by the country’s busy wedding season, which limited venue availability. With Goa confirmed, the board expects to secure a suitable location for the smaller, end‑of‑cycle auction.

The Goa auction is described as the final mini‑auction of the current IPL cycle, marking the last opportunity for teams to make adjustments before the next full‑scale auction. The event is expected to be smaller in scale compared to the mega‑auctions held in previous years.

In parallel with the auction announcement, the BCCI is seeking fresh feedback from IPL franchises on the Impact Player rule, a strategic substitution provision that allows teams to replace a player at any stage of a match. The rule was discussed at a recent Governing Council meeting, and the board aims to incorporate franchise input before finalising its status for future seasons.

The IPL 2027 auction in Goa is slated for December, with the exact date to be confirmed by the BCCI. The venue selection completes the board’s plan to rotate the auction between domestic and overseas locations, concluding the current auction cycle before the next full‑scale player draft.
