Taiwan enhances maritime patrol capacity at vulnerable Pratas Islands

Taiwan has officially upgraded its maritime patrol and enforcement capacity around the Pratas Islands, a strategically significant outpost located in the South China Sea. The government in Taipei stated that these enhancements are a direct response to a rise in Chinese activities in the region. The Pratas Islands, situated roughly 400 kilometers from Taiwan, are considered by security experts to be vulnerable to potential military action due to their distance from the main island.

The Taiwan Coast Guard announced that the upgrades were finalized following the completion of a wharf project in July. This infrastructure improvement has allowed for the formal stationing of a newly built 100-ton-class patrol boat at the islands. According to officials, this addition significantly bolsters nearshore patrol capabilities and improves the immediate mobile response capacity of the coast guard in the area.

In addition to the new vessel, Taiwan has begun regularly deploying larger patrol ships to the waters surrounding the Pratas Islands. The coast guard described this shift as a means of demonstrating strong multi-layered deterrence and mobile enforcement capabilities. These measures are intended to solidify Taiwan's presence in the disputed waters, which lie between southern Taiwan and Hong Kong.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has increased its military presence around the island over the past five years. Beijing does not recognize any claims of sovereignty asserted by the government in Taipei, including those over the Pratas Islands. The Taiwan Affairs Office in China did not immediately provide a comment regarding the recent upgrades to Taiwan's maritime patrol capacity.
