Socceroos face Brazil in Townsville match

Disaster for Australia! Brazil have equalised in the final minute.

It comes from a corner – Brazil’s final chance. Raphinha takes it again, a beautiful delivery into the centre of the box where Rayan heads it with force. Beach gets there but there’s too much force behind the ball and it passes him into the back of the net.

In the second minute of added time, Herrington blocks the ball to concede a corner but Raphinha can’t quite make the most of the chance, he delivers it in to the box, Yazbeck heads it out and Raphinha, who gets the rebound, shoots wide.

The Socceroos won’t let this slip out of their hands (or rather, their feet) easily. They’ve got all their bodies back in their defensive half to block a shot from Paula. Brazil win two corners, but still Australia quash any chances.

There are just six minutes of regular time left and still, Popovic isn’t playing it too safe, making a triple substitution. Introducing Marcus Younis for his first cap to replace Metcalfe, he’s joined by Jason Geria who comes on for Italiano and Aiden O’Neill replaces Okon-Engstler.

Brazil make a triple substitution swapping Reis with Jair Cunha, Santos with Mauro Junior and Estevao – who won’t get his goal tonight – with Rayan. Cunha was a huge threat for Brazil during the World Cup. Can Australia hold on to this lead?

Australia survive momentum from Brazil, no doubt embarrassed to be on the back foot after Irankunda’s stunner. That will go down as one of the greatest Socceroos goals.

Luiz gets a shot off with his right foot from outside the box but its blocked by Souttar’s head and the impact knocks him on his back. He’s treated on the pitch.

The Socceroos are still without a shot on target in this half when Okon-Engstler is fouled.

After making an easy save, Beach is lucky Raphinha is off target because it doesn’t look like he’d have gotten to the ball in time when the Brazilian shoots with his left foot from outside the box.

Brazil are making more changes as Pedro replaces Endrick and Vini Jnr comes off for Samuel Lino.

Okon-Engstler wins a free kick after he’s fouled by Endrick before Vini Jnr fires a shot, mostly without any sting, on target at the hour mark. It’s an easy catch for Beach in the centre of the goal.

Irvine wins a free kick himself after being fouled by Santos and the decision is met with applause.

Behich makes a cross and tries to find Metcalfe but his hands find his head instead in disappointment.

Brazil make substitutions: Douglas Luiz is on for Guimaraes.

Australia 0-0 Brazil, 61 minutes

Australia have an exciting moment when Okon-Engstler wins the ball back in their defensive half before he passes to Metcalfe who finds Italiano on the right. His head strapped thick, Italiano tries to cross the ball but it’s deflected for an Australian corner instead.

Again, they can’t find a finish after Metcalfe delivers the ball low.

Brazil win the ball on the counter, and Endrick is denied a chance by Souttar who makes a well-timed sliding tackle on the left edge of the box. That is a big moment for the big man.

The referee awards Brazil the corner before it’s changed to a goal kick on review. If anyone’s having a bad night it’s Tanimoto.

This half hasn’t started the way the last did as Australia are defending early on – that is until Yengi capitalises on a loose pass from Brazil and finds Irankunda striding up the pitch.

But still, Brazil win it back and Estevao, denied of a goal just before the first half ended, is after retribution. He wants a goal for himself even if it means shooting from outside the box, high and wide.
