Bill Gates warns of AI's potential to contribute to mass-casualty events

Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence is “powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths” during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He expressed concern that advanced AI tools could be misused by bad actors and emphasized the need for government involvement in establishing safeguards and monitoring mechanisms.

Gates called for law‑enforcement agencies and politicians to join the discussion on how to regulate AI development. He said that clear regulatory frameworks are essential to prevent the technology from being weaponized or otherwise causing large‑scale harm.

His remarks echo a call from Anthropic’s chief executive, Dario Amodei, who in a September essay urged frontier AI companies to slow development through regulation. The essay received public support from other industry figures, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman.

Anthropic has recently released a report documenting several cases in which its AI system, Claude, was used by both state and non‑state actors to plan drone attacks and conduct risky biological research. The report follows a viral post by former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who resigned and warned that AI labs were “gambling with our lives.”

Despite the warnings from Gates, Amodei and other industry leaders, U.S. policymakers have not indicated plans to pause or significantly slow AI development, and current regulatory discussions remain ongoing.
