Bogong Moths Swarm Properties Across Sydney and Melbourne

A significant migration of native bogong moths has resulted in large swarms appearing at residential properties across a wide corridor stretching from Melbourne to Sydney. The influx of insects has been attributed to recent weather patterns, specifically wild winds that have displaced the moths from their typical migratory route.

The bogong moth is a species native to Australia known for its long-distance seasonal movements. Under normal conditions, these moths travel to specific high-altitude caves in the Australian Alps to aestivate, or enter a state of dormancy, during the warmer summer months.

The current displacement has led to thousands of the insects seeking shelter in urban and suburban environments. Residents in the affected regions have reported large numbers of the moths congregating on the exterior and interior of homes, as the insects are often drawn to artificial light sources.

Experts note that while the presence of such large swarms can be disruptive to residents, the moths are not harmful to humans. The migration is a natural phenomenon, and the current deviation from their path is a direct consequence of the strong wind systems that have impacted the eastern states.
