Police register three FIRs following violence at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute

The Kolkata police have registered three First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with the violence at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), reported on Sunday (September 27, 2026).

While one FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Sukanta Majumder, Dean-Film, SRFTI, the other was based on a complaint filed by Anjan Sinha, provincial head of the Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat, West Bengal chapter. The third FIR was registered on a complaint by Koushick Bose, Additional Officer-in-Charge, Panchasayar police station.

Unknown persons wrongfully restrained students and two faculty members, voluntarily causing hurt, Prof. Majumder said in his complaint.

Mr. Bose’s complaint against a group of unknown students alleges that the latter wrongfully restrained him and other police personnel, used criminal force, and manhandled them with intent to deter them from discharging their duties as public servants.

Mr. Sinha’s complaint stated that a group of unknown students of the SRFTI Students Union gheroaed them inside a hall in the campus, wrongfully restrained them from proceeding, abused them with filthy language, and insulted the modesty of female members present with gestures.

Meanwhile, students, artistes and filmmakers organised a peaceful protest at the main gate of the campus. “Our institutions belong to the people, not to political goons and forces that seek to silence dissent,” a statement from the SRFTI students’ union said, calling people to join the movement.

Violence erupted inside the SRFTI campus in Kolkata on Sunday (September 27, 2026) as students of the institute clashed with members of a right-wing consumer group holding an event inside the campus. Representatives of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat were holding a meeting inside the SRFTI auditorium when a section of students raised objections to the entry of outsiders into the campus.

Several videos of the violence have emerged, which show students tearing posters inside the hall where the event was held, and outsiders assaulting students. The students allegedly put up posters near the auditorium as a mark of protest, following which a heated exchange took place between them and members of the consumer group.

A section of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have criticised the students for the violence.

Violence erupted at the city’s Jadavpur University on August 19 when students affiliated to a left-wing students’ organisation clashed with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
