Pentagon awards RTX's Raytheon $20.7 billion contract for AMRAAM missiles amid stockpile concerns - Reuters

The Pentagon has awarded RTX’s Raytheon business a provisional multiyear contract valued at $20.7 billion to accelerate the production of Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM). This agreement is part of a broader effort by the U.S. military to replenish stockpiles that have been drawn down by ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The U.S. has provided significant quantities of weaponry to international allies while simultaneously utilizing munitions in its own military operations in the Middle East. These activities have prompted concerns regarding the current inventory levels of precision-guided weapons and key air defense systems.

The AMRAAM is a versatile munition utilized in air-to-air combat by jet fighters. It also serves as a primary component of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), which is currently deployed to defend the Washington area and is used by more than a dozen other nations, including Ukraine, Oman, and Qatar.

This contract is the latest in a series of large-scale munitions agreements pursued by the Pentagon this year, intended to pressure defense contractors to increase production capacity. The deal follows a similar structure to a $58.6 billion contract awarded to Lockheed Martin in July for Patriot interceptors, which established a seven-year procurement plan extending through fiscal year 2032.

Despite the scale of these production agreements, industry executives have noted that Congress has not yet appropriated the necessary funding to support the full multiyear commitments. Consequently, contractors may face challenges in investing at scale in the required components and facilities until lawmakers finalize the necessary budget allocations.
