The plan, presented in a video message, is intended to confront what the mayor described as “the scourge of antisemitism now and in the future” and to demonstrate municipal leadership on the issue.

Key components of the proposal include allocating additional protection funds to synagogues, enhancing security measures at Jewish houses of worship, and integrating a greater emphasis on Jewish history into the public‑school curriculum. The city will also increase the visibility of Jewish religious and cultural landmarks, with municipal agencies committing to regularly feature these sites in official communications and public programming.

Mayor Mamdani noted that while Jewish residents represent roughly 12 percent of New York City’s population, they account for about half of all reported bias incidents. He framed the disparity as unacceptable and asserted that the city has an obligation to change the pattern, emphasizing that City Hall will lead the effort.

The mayor, a Democrat and the city’s first Muslim mayor, has been an outspoken advocate for Palestinian civil rights and has publicly accused the Israeli government of committing genocide in Gaza. He maintains that criticism of Israeli policies is distinct from antisemitism. Political opponents, however, have argued that his strong language on the Middle East conflict blurs that line and may contribute to anti‑Jewish sentiment.
