Investigators at Cornell University have been reviewing a sexual assault allegation involving a student who identified herself as “Jane Doe.” The complaint, first reported to the Cornell University Police Department in 2024, prompted an internal investigation that produced a detailed police report, which the university has made available to the public.
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten announced that his office will reopen a criminal inquiry into the alleged assault. He said the case will be presented to a grand jury, which will consider the evidence and determine whether criminal charges are warranted. Van Houten emphasized that any prosecution will be pursued “in the most objective and impartial means possible.”
When the district attorney’s office initially reviewed the matter two years ago, it concluded that the evidence provided in the complainant’s statement did not satisfy the legal threshold for filing charges. The reopening follows a new sworn statement from Jane Doe submitted in November 2024. In that statement, she did not allege that she had been drugged against her will or gang‑raped; instead, she described her involvement in drug use and sexual activity as voluntary, conscious, and consensual.
The district attorney’s office has reached out to Jane Doe and her legal representatives to obtain additional information as it prepares the case for the grand jury. The university’s police department has confirmed that it shared a “lengthy police investigation report” with the authorities, though the contents of that report have not been disclosed in full.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no formal charges have been filed at this time. Both the university and the county prosecutor’s office have indicated that they will continue to assess the evidence and cooperate with any legal proceedings that may arise.
