MI5 warns universities to cut ties with Chinese institute - Financial Times

MI5 has issued a formal warning to universities across the United Kingdom, urging them to reassess and, where necessary, terminate links with a Chinese research institute that the security service says poses a risk of espionage. The advisory was circulated to university leaders and the Department for Education, highlighting concerns that the institute could be used to gather intelligence on British academic and research activities.

The security service’s assessment is based on intelligence indicating that the Chinese institute may be operating under the direction of foreign intelligence agencies, seeking to exploit academic collaborations, joint projects and student exchanges. MI5 cautioned that such relationships could provide opportunities for the collection of sensitive information, recruitment of assets, or influence‑building within the UK higher‑education sector.

In response, the Department for Education has instructed universities to conduct thorough reviews of any existing partnerships, funding arrangements, joint research programmes and staff exchanges involving the institute. Universities are asked to report the outcomes of these reviews and to take appropriate action, including the possible termination of contracts, where a risk is identified.

Several institutions have already begun internal audits of their collaborations with the Chinese institute. Preliminary findings at a number of universities indicate that while some projects are purely academic, others involve access to advanced technologies or data that could be of interest to foreign intelligence services.
