First reported 1 day ago · latest update 1 day agoPoland will implement new rules of engagement for its air defense systems starting in October to accelerate the response to potential threats within its airspace. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the policy change during a press briefing, noting that the update aims to streamline decision-making processes for military personnel.
The primary adjustment involves removing the current requirement for pilots to perform a visual identification of an airborne object before engaging it. Under the previous protocols, military personnel were often required to physically sight a target, a step that officials indicated could delay necessary defensive actions in fast-moving scenarios.
Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk explained that the new standard will shift toward positive verification. This approach allows for engagement based on alternative data points, such as radar readings, the unauthorized entry of an object into a designated no-fly zone, or intelligence provided by Ukrainian counterparts.
Government officials stated that these measures are a direct response to the heightened risk of airspace violations linked to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Furthermore, the updated procedures are intended to address potential hybrid threats that could target Polish territory.
The implementation of these rules does not require new legislation, according to the Defense Minister. The decision follows internal discussions with soldiers operating air, missile, and anti-defense systems, as well as pilots, to ensure clarity and precision in defensive operations.
Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that the changes are designed to provide military operators with the necessary framework to act decisively in the current security environment. The new protocols are scheduled to take effect at the beginning of October.
