Marjoe Gortner, who first rose to national attention as a child evangelist before transitioning to a career in film and television, died on Friday, October 2, at the age of 82. His death, attributed to complications from heart failure, was announced by his family in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A memorial notice from his wife, Susan Magestro, indicated that Gortner had been dealing with health problems for several years prior to his passing.
Gortner’s early fame stemmed from his work as a teenage preacher, a period that became the focus of the 1972 Oscar‑winning documentary “Marjoe.” The film, which examined the world of evangelical revivals and Gortner’s role within it, brought him widespread recognition beyond the pulpit and marked a turning point toward a new professional path.
Following the documentary’s success, Gortner signed a contract with Universal Pictures and embarked on an acting career that spanned several decades. He appeared in the 1974 disaster film “Earthquake,” and later secured a recurring role on the 1980s primetime soap opera “Falcon Crest.” His television work also included a starring part opposite Lynda Carter in the series “Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw.”
In addition to his screen roles, Gortner’s life story continued to attract interest for its dramatic shift from religious revivalist to Hollywood performer. Colleagues and observers noted his ability to navigate both worlds, a rarity that contributed to his lasting cultural footprint.
Gortner is survived by his wife, Susan Magestro. Funeral arrangements have not been publicly disclosed.
