Six people were hauled to the ground and arrested on a major Melbourne freeway after an early-morning home invasion sparked a dramatic police pursuit across the city.

All outbound lanes on the Monash Freeway at Warrigal Road were closed about midday on Tuesday after a stolen car was seen driving erratically.

Several hours earlier, police were called to reports of an aggravated burglary at a property in Clonaig Street, Brighton East, just after 5.30am.

Police said an occupant woke to the sound of noises inside the home, before offenders stole two cars and fled.
