First reported 1 hour ago · latest update 31 minutes agoA First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhawan premises without permission during an opposition protest in Delhi. The filing was confirmed by the Delhi Police, which also recorded a complaint from Akashvani staffers regarding the forced entry by the leaders and accompanying Members of Parliament.
The protest was organized by the opposition bloc over allegations of “vote chori” and to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing controversies surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The demonstrators began a sit‑in at the Akashvani Bhawan after police halted an INDIA bloc march that was moving toward the Election Commission’s office, located roughly 300 metres away.
Rahul Gandhi entered the All India Radio (AIR) premises on Parliament Street around noon and joined the sit‑in, which lasted for more than eight hours. During the march from Parliament toward the Election Commission, he and other MPs climbed atop barricades while chanting slogans such as “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod.” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, NCP‑SP MP Supriya Sule and several other opposition leaders also participated in the march.
Security personnel stopped the MPs near the NITI Aayog office amid heavy barricading around Parliament and the Election Commission building. Police later moved in to clear the AIR premises, forcibly removing Rahul Gandhi and a number of other Congress leaders and MPs, including K. C. Venugopal, Charanjit Singh Channi, Pawan Khera, K. Suresh, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Deepender Hooda, Praniti Shinde, Varsha Gaekwad and Imran Pratapgarhi.
The detained leaders were taken to the New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp. They were released later that night after being held for several hours. The Election Commission has stated that no appointment had been sought by any political party before 4 p.m. on the day of the protest, and it described the subsequent request from a delegation of 240 MPs as unusual, noting that such meetings are normally held at the Commission’s own premises.
